I want to be very transparent with how I source my materials in my upcoming projects. I'm really keen to do this so any other budding makers who might find themselves on my site know places to go if they ever find themselves in need of some good supplies, as I have found in these early days of running my own business, some of these places are often a bit harder to come across than you might think/want.
Last week I needed to get some timber for an upcoming project I'm doing for a family member, an inlaid house number. I needed to find a solid timber plank, although I wasn't too sure of what I exactly wanted. So on an unseasonably sunny Wednesday morning I went to Morgan Timber in Strood to see what they have in stock. Now it is important to say here that they have been in the process of closing for a couple of years now, so as a result they are only open on Wednesdays and Thursdays so make sure to plan accordingly. Their warehouse is a bit tucked away, although it is still reasonably easy to find, as it is signposted, and can be found on your phone's map supplier. The staff are all really friendly, and are really helpful with any questions you might have. For my numbering project I bought a really nice piece of Ash which was more than big enough, and I also increased my stock of wood by buying some decently large pieces of; American Walnut, Maple, and European Oak all for a really good price.
If you are in Kent and Medway specifically like myself I really cannot recommend Morgan Timber enough, but make sure you get there as soon as you can because as I said they are in the process of closing down, so they are running down their stock as a result. They have a great range of hardwood and softwood planks, as well as small dimension pieces for more detailed pieces of woodworking or joinery. They also have some stuff like doors, old railway sleepers, and even a section of the handrails you can find at Bluewater.
